Sentinel, It was all a Lie, gen
I don't know if I posted this at lj or any other place.  I forgot about this one.

It was all a Lie

It was all a lie

Blair packed his duffle bag, preparing for his trip that in some ways would be his last, but it was also a continuance of his journey. Picking up his journal he looked at thinking of what had been written in the last three months was more off the wall than the last four years of living with Jim Ellison.

Three months ago he had confessed that his Sentinel thesis was a lie to keep Jim safe. He lost his teaching fellowship, grants, and academic integrity. Blair found himself turned away by a majority of his friends and colleagues, his resources drying quickly with the lack of income.   He found himself hounded by the press.

Blair was surprised how Jim watched from the sidelines, not quite doing anything to help him, but supporting him when they were alone.

Then the bottom dropped out of his life.

Jim had come to him, making them dinner, one of his favorite recipes that Jim cooked and proceeded to tell him that being a Sentinel was pure bullshit. "Blair, I have lived these last four years, living a lie. I am not a Sentinel. I do have heightened senses but they are not genetic. Burton made up the genetic code; however, he did meet with those who kept watch over tribes."

"If it's not genetics, then what is it?" Blair asked.

Jim laughed and sat back. "I got a story for you, one that even you will find hard to digest."

"Hit me with your best shot," Blair replied.

"I'm a vampire."

Blair laughed going, "right." Then he looked at Jim and something had changed. His mouth and facial features changed a bit. "Okay," he said slowly.

"I was overloaded. Most all we went through is true, but only the source of it was, shall I say, misled."

"You're a vampire?" Blair asked. "And you suck blood? Kill people?"

"In this reality the only blood taken in when we first cross over, and slowly we get to a point where we can operate in public, only occasionally taking a bite out of life."

"And by telling me this …" Blair trailed off.

"I've decided to take on a young one. You."

"Why now?"

"You've lost everything, it's a prime time to take on the change and go on to a new life."

"And if I don't, by me knowing, you can't let me live." Blair looked at the serious face that watched him.

"You, my dear professor, are correct. I can give you the world, but I can take your life."

Blair sat back.

"You set me up," Blair stated.

"Let's say the elements fell to my advantage." Jim stood up and went to the box he had brought up from the storage in the basement. He returned with it, unfolding the flaps and pulling out several large old books.   "I know that this is the time to let you read the true source of my senses. Several of my kinsmen over the years have written what they have found. Read them and then we'll talk about your inanition into the brotherhood."

Blair looked at the books that were set on the table. "And if I don't want to ~join~?"

"I will do what I must to keep our secret. You can not walk with the knowledge."

With that, Jim went to the living room and turned on the television, leaving Blair with the books on what might be his coming life.

Blair read the books, sleeping little and reading, then cross referencing with items at the downtown library and on line, stories that were folklore and unsolved crimes here and there.

One evening Blair sat before Jim and asked him more. "If I decide to crossover, how will that be?"

"A controlled draining, I would feast on you to a point. We will have to be away from here, someplace where I can keep you safe."

"Safe?"

"You will have the drive strong within you. I will have to take measures so not to harm others or myself. But once you gain control, we can move on and enjoy what we have to offer."

"Bill Ellison?"

"A vampire, as is Steven. There is quite a population of us."

"You age."

"We can age, choose a life, and stay with it for sometime, before moving on. We network."

"Then what was Barnes?" Blair asked.

Jim shifted, "A burning. She wanted to hurt me. We've crossed before. She's one of us."

"What will I be to you?" Blair asked.

"My friend of course."

And now with the decision made, he was about to shut down the life he had been living and moving onto something more significant, daring, little known.    He had made his decision and told all that still knew him he was moving on, looking for a new life beyond Cascade.

Jim was setting him up in a cabin in the woods where he would join him after he closed down his own known life.

Then Jim would take him to the next level, to bring him to his end and new beginning.

Blair put the journal and some others into his bag, knowing that he was going to have to write of his own experience from the beginning to pass with the others.

"Ready Chief?" Jim asked.

Blair looked once more at his room. Jim said he would ship what he thought was important to storage for them to retrieve once they settled somewhere.

"Guess I am," and zipped the duffle bag and picked it up, following Jim.
